October 1st is International Day of Older Persons!

The United Nations (UN) General Assembly established the awareness day in 1990 to bring greater attention to the needs of older people around the globe, while also celebrating their significant role in society. According to the UN, about 700 million people are currently over the age of 60. The number is expected to rise to two billion by 2050.

More than 60 countries around the world will recognize the annual International Day of the Older Persons, paying special attention to this year’s theme, which is packed with importance: “The Journey to Age Equality.” Age discrimination, or ageism, has permeated many cultures and nations around the world, including the United States. Devaluing someone because of their age undermines their contributions, both past and future.

We can learn a great deal from the generations that precede us. When we look to people who have the institutional knowledge, life experiences and situational awareness, we can better manage the issues that perplex and divide us today.

At Goodwin Living, every day is a celebration of the vibrant wisdom and spirit of older adults. More than 1,200 Goodwin Living Life Plan Community residents and Goodwin Living At Home members regularly contribute Goodwin Living as well as communities throughout Northern Virginia. They give their time, talents and perspectives to benefit the greater good. Nearly 900 Goodwin Living employees count ourselves honored to be surrounded by the older adults we support, honor and uplift through our mission.

A special thank you to Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads resident Dottie Moser for reminding The Good Life of this special day. As Dottie suggests “get out your best wine, invite others to join you, and toast each other. Here’s to us!” We encourage our readers to join us in toasting older adults and especially those who are part of our lives!
