At Goodwin Living, we are more than simply bricks and mortar. Our mission as a not-for-profit is to support, honor and uplift the lives of older adults and the people who care for them. That mission is woven into everything we do.
We know we can’t achieve our goal of uplifting residents, members and employees without the necessary financial strength. So we are committed to being effective stewards of our resources. And that includes being transparent about our financial strength. We are a rarity in the world of not-for-profit Life Plan Communities, because we seek investment-grade ratings every year in order to continuously improve our position. We have a strong outlook, according to both the Better Business Bureau and Fitch Ratings.
Good governance can be felt all the way through an organization, and ours thrives under excellent, expert oversight. Clear management and an engaged board help us to innovate, remain financially strong and achieve significant accreditations. As part of our mission to involve residents in our community, our Governance Committee nominated one – Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads resident Anthony “Tony” Tambasco – to serve on our Board of Trustees. He brings great wisdom and a necessary perspective to our decisions, including the development of our Strategic Plan in 2018. We also take great care of our team members, allowing them to focus on caring for residents. We offer terrific employee benefits covering everything from health care to childcare to college tuition. We have been recognized for this by the Washington Post, which named us one of the top workplaces in the D.C. area in 2019, 2020 and 2021.
We encourage residents to stay engaged in their community, and Goodwin Living plays a pivotal role in the larger communities around us. We are committed to both the letter and the spirit of U.S. policy regarding equal housing and present no barriers to anyone seeking housing, no matter their race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin. We partner with SAGECare, which offers training and guidance on serving older LGBTQ adults. And we are involved in dozens of government and civic organizations that serve the community.

Both Goodwin Living communities are licensed by the Virginia Department of Social Services and the Virginia Department of Health. Both are certified by the federal government for participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs, and both are a five-star Medicare facility. The Commonwealth of Virginia State Corporation Bureau of Insurance reviews our annual disclosure statements and approves new contracts, for our life plan communities as well as our age in place continuing care at home program, Goodwin Living at Home.
We are committed to creating communities of the very highest quality. So we are proud that Goodwin Living Incorporated was one of the first senior living and care organizations in the United States to earn accreditation from the highly respected Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities and Continuing Care Accreditation Commission (CARF/CCAC). We have sought, and received, this accreditation every five years since 1992. There are only 300 communities in the nation who voluntarily undergo this rigorous accreditation. Both Goodwin House Alexandria and Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads received this certification in 2018.
