The Washington Post Names Goodwin House Incorporated a 2021 Top Washington-Area Workplace

Goodwin House Incorporated Ranks #6 out of 32 Companies 

Alexandria, VA – Goodwin House Incorporated (GHI) has been named one of the top 10 organizations in The Washington Post 2021 Top Workplaces in the Washington, D.C. area, and ranked No. 6 in the large company category on the list of organizations receiving a Top Workplace designation. This is the third year in a row that Goodwin House received this honor.

Selection is based solely on employee feedback gathered through an anonymous third-party survey administered by research partner Energage, LLC, which measured several aspects of workplace culture, including alignment, engagement and leadership. For the 2021 survey, more than 65,500 employees of Washington, D.C.-area organizations shared their feedback through the survey.

GHI is a leader in the senior living and healthcare services industry, serving more than 2,100 older adults across Northern Virginia and the D.C. area, and many others through brain health and other virtual programming. GHI employs nearly 900 individuals who represent more than 65 different countries. In addition to providing employees with full health care benefits, tuition support and student loan repayment for vocational training as well as college and graduate degrees, GHI launched an alliance in 2020 with the University of Maryland that expands the affordability of college education for Goodwin House employees and their families. In 2018, GHI and the Goodwin House Foundation created a citizenship application fee program that provides employees with grants to cover the cost of citizenship application fees. To date, GHI and the Goodwin House Foundation have supported the citizenship fees for 89 employees and close to $250,000 in tuition assistance.

With a deep commitment to growing our nation’s senior living workforce, GHI provides over 15,000 hours of annual clinical education to students pursuing careers in healthcare with a focus on serving older adults. GHI also partners with a wide range of regional universities for internships and degree coursework. These universities include Northern Virginia Community College, George Mason University, Mary Washington University, the University of Maryland Global Campus, George Washington University and Georgetown University.

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, GHI amplified its infection control protocols to ensure the health and safety of staff, residents and members of the Goodwin House at Home program aging in place in their homes. The Alexandria-based nonprofit also launched an extensive program of virus protection and support benefits for employees, including:

• Proactively testing all residents and staff, which started in May 2020, before it was required by the Virginia Department of Health
• Publishing safety guides for employees and their families, and providing staff with Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to share with their family members at home
• Establishing multiple new staff support programs, including grant programs though the Goodwin House Foundation to provide up to $1,000 of financial assistance for staff members adversely affected by COVID-19
• Providing a hero differential pay increase to the majority of staff, with the differentials ranging from 50 cents to $2 per hour depending on their position
• Providing a majority of the staff with a $400 gratitude bonus for their continued dedication and commitment to GHI residents, Goodwin House at Home members and patients served by GHI

In 2020, GHI established its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee, which consists of a group of staff and residents who work together to educate, embrace and empower a workplace of diversity, equality and inclusion. Mary Lewis Hix, GHI Board of Trustees Chair, also serves on the GHI DEI Committee. Last June, Goodwin House Incorporated became the first senior living community in Northern Virginia to receive gold-level certification from Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders (SAGE). GHI’s participation in the SAGECare program provides staff members with the proper training and education to work with older adults in the LGBT+ community. As a gold-level provider, GHI ensures that SAGECare is an integral component of its ongoing efforts to create an inclusive community. SAGECare training is part of new employee orientation.
