Alexandria, Va. — On Saturday, June 14, 2025, the Alexandria City Council unanimously approved a proposal by Goodwin Living for a new continuing care retirement community that will serve more than 350 older adults. The new community, Goodwin House Seminary Road, will be located near Seminary Road and Beauregard Street in the West End of Alexandria. The vote follows unanimous support from the Alexandria Planning Commission on June 4. At a projected cost of $330 million, the project represents one of the largest single investments in the West End.
“Since our founding in 1956, Goodwin Living has grown to serve more than 4,000 older adults across the National Capital region, yet we have never forgotten our roots in Alexandria,” said Rob Liebreich, president and CEO of Goodwin Living. “When we considered where to meet the growing need for senior housing, we remained committed to our home city. We are grateful to the Alexandria City Council and Planning Commission for supporting our vision to uplift the lives of more older adults in Alexandria.”
Named for its proximity to Seminary Road, Goodwin House Seminary Road will feature two residential towers connected at the ground level by a two-story entrance lobby, shared amenity areas and a landscaped outdoor plaza on the second floor. Goodwin House Seminary Road will have 217 independent living apartments, 16 assisted living apartments, a dedicated memory care area and a Medicare/Medicaid-certified health care center offering skilled nursing, short-term rehabilitation, long-term care and a state-of-the-art rehab center.
Designed for adults age 55 and older, Goodwin House Seminary Road will bring health and nature together through an urban arboretum approach that integrates nature, architecture and space. A centerpiece example of this urban arboretum design is a third-floor terrace linking the two towers with a curated fusion of botanical beauty and creative expression, designed to promote wellness and reflection amidst soaking in the outdoors.
Residents will have access to amenities, programs and activities that foster community, support brain and body wellness and nurture the spirit.
The sales center for Goodwin House Seminary Road opens in August 2025 and will be conveniently located within minutes of the new community at 1800 N Beauregard Street, Suite 101, Alexandria VA. Construction is expected to begin in late 2026 or early 2027, with an anticipated opening in 2029.
Goodwin House Seminary Road is also expected to deliver a major economic boost to the Alexandria region. The project will:
This investment reinforces the longstanding Goodwin Living commitment to Alexandria and reflects the organization’s mission to support, honor and uplift the lives of older adults and those who care for them.
