(Alexandria, Va.) March 24, 2023 – Today, Goodwin Living™, a not-for-profit, faith-based, senior living and health care services organization in the National Capital Region, announced that Dr. Margaret Gloria, MD, HMD, Medical Director of Goodwin Hospice, was among the honored recipients of the 2023 Healthcare Council Employee of the Year Award. Dr. Gloria was recognized at the Healthcare Council’s Annual Employee of the Year Awards and the Matthew F. McNulty Award Luncheon at the Congressional Country Club on March 9, 2023.

Presented annually, the Healthcare Council Employee of the Year Award is given to an individual employee of member organizations who each select someone with outstanding service during the prior year. Recognition is given to those who made a significant contribution in healthcare in 2022 and is based on three criteria: Sustainability, Quality and Customer/Patient Satisfaction.

“Dr. Gloria is a trusted and valued team member who has touched the lives of thousands of older adults across the National Capital Region,” said Rob Liebreich, President and CEO of Goodwin Living. “Through her clinical leadership of Goodwin Hospice as well as the contributions she made during the pandemic to help other organizations obtain testing and to share her expertise in staying safe on dozens of public webinars, Dr. Gloria is a dedicated team member in uplifting the lives of older adults.”

As Medical Director of Goodwin Hospice, Dr. Gloria guides the care provided to patients served through Goodwin Hospice, provides oversight for physicians and advanced practitioners and gives strategic guidance to the Goodwin Living leadership on COVID-19, academic research and the clinical models that enhance care for the thousands of older adults served by Goodwin Living. She has dedicated her career to advocating for patient-first end-of-life care and addressing the misconceptions around hospice care and palliative medicine. In 2019, Dr. Gloria achieved the Hospice Medical Director Certification (HMDC®), a renowned accomplishment earned by only 1,100 physicians in the United States. This certification is given to those who meet exceptional standards for knowledge and practice as a hospice physician.

“It’s such an honor to be recognized by my colleagues at Goodwin Living and The Healthcare Council,” said Dr. Gloria. “This award is a representation of the outstanding team at Goodwin Living and their unwavering commitment as we support and uplift the lives of more older adults in our community. Thank you Goodwin Living team.”

In addition to her role at Goodwin Living, Dr. Gloria serves as an assistant clinical professor at George Washington University where she oversees palliative fellows and shares her expertise about hospice care and palliative medicine with medical students and residents who are interested in pursuing a career in end-of-life medical care. She has served as the Medical Director for Goodwin Hospice since February 2019.

“The Healthcare Council is honored to recognize exceptional employees in the DMV region each year for their outstanding service,” said Les Pitton, President & CEO of the Healthcare Council. “This year was the 11th Annual Employee of the Year Awards Ceremony honoring recipients with a crystal award and certificate. Dr. Margaret Gloria, Medical Director of Goodwin Hospice, was recognized for her guidance to hospice patients and their families. As someone who serves on numerous leadership teams providing oversight and strategic support across many dimensions, she demonstrates her empathy and understanding of service to others. Helping others to understand the impact of the end-of-life journey on a person and family and educating medical students on palliative medicine is only some of her important work. We at the Healthcare Council were pleased to recognize Dr. Gloria and show our esteem for all she does for Goodwin Hospice.”

Goodwin Living extends gratitude and congratulations to Dr. Gloria.
