Alexandria, VA – Today, U.S. News & World Report released their annual “Best Nursing Homes” list for 2019-20. Both Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads and Goodwin House Alexandria are among those listed, and both received the highest ratings. To develop the list, U.S. News reviewed more than 15,000 nursing care centers throughout the country, covering every state and nearly 100 metropolitan areas. Out of all those evaluated, 2,969 centers received the “Best Nursing Home” distinction.
U.S. News states on their website: “For the aging population in America, a nursing home should meet the specific level of care based on the needs of each patient or resident,” said Kim Castro, editor and chief content officer of U.S. News. “The U.S. News Best Nursing Home ratings hone in on measurements like emergency room visits, quality of staff and proper distribution of medical and physical therapy to help families make an informed decision. These ratings help individuals and their families begin their search for senior care and should be used in consultation with a medical professional and in-depth on-site visits.”
Since 2009, U.S. News has provided this service, relying on their own evaluation of data provided by the federal government including that collected by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid (CMS). CMS inspectors visit nursing care centers annually to ensure the centers are following the standards of this federal agency. Through their own careful assessment, U.S. News provides this list to serve as a resource for anyone who might be searching for this specialized care.
For the 2019-20 listings, U.S. News offers a new long-term care rating. This new featured rating reflects their evaluation of data that assesses care provided to residents who need assistance with daily activities. Such data includes staffing levels, prevention of visits to the emergency room and vaccination rates. Both Goodwin House Alexandria and Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads were among the 1,139 centers out of the 13,685 evaluated to receive the “High-Performing” rating.
