Continuing Care at Home Model Emerges

By Lindsay Hutter, GHI Chief Strategy & Marketing Officer

Virginia Resident Marin Faga says “care management” support is key.

A cardiac arrest in 2013 was Martin Faga’s wake-up call. Recovering from this health crisis presented Faga the opportunity to realize how important it is to have someone who can navigate the road to recovery, especially given the goal he and his wife, Barbara, have to stay in their home as they age.

After a full recovery, Faga and his wife acted quickly to join the first continuing care at home program in Virginia, Goodwin Living At Home (GLAH). Created by Goodwin House Incorporated (GHI) in 2014, GLAH is an innovative program that provides members with care coordination in addition to long-term care benefits.

Recently, marketWatch published a feature story on these at home programs as well as other creative options to consider as you plan for your future. There are many new ways and places to age and to reimagine aging.

GLAH Executive Director Karen Skeens has been with the program since it launched five years ago. She’s excited about what the program has to offer and the fact that programs like GLAH are getting some national media attention. “Continuing care at home programs are still relatively new to many people,” Skeen says. “When we started, we were the 16th CCAH in the country. Today, there are more than 30! Raising the profile of these programs throughout the country helps all of us as we seek to provide excellent options that ensure people thrive and live where they wish as they age.”

Goodwin Living At Home wishes to thank GLAH Members Marin & Barbara Faga for their membership and his contributions to this MarketWatch story.
