Choose the Right Senior Living Experience for You

If moving to a senior living community is the best option for you or a loved one, it’s time to decide which community is the right one for you. With countless options available, it’s not an easy decision. You can narrow your search by knowing what you can afford and determining your top priorities for what you want most in a community. You can make the best choice when you consider these four factors.

Continuum of Services

One of the most important things to look for in a senior living community is whether they offer a continuum of services. Life Plan Communities, previously called Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs), offer a full spectrum of health services and care options. These communities are ideal because residents can remain there if they develop a need for assisted living, nursing care or memory care. By having access to a variety of care levels, residents are able to stay in a place that’s familiar to them, surrounded by friends.

Activities & Engagement

A second factor to consider when choosing a senior living community is the number of recreational activities they offer. Does the community offer the type of activities you enjoy? Are there transportation options for things like grocery shopping or off-campus events? Are the activities offered on-site? Does the community offer landscaped outdoor space for residents to enjoy? Engaging activities are crucial to happiness, cognition and fulfillment. You may already have a full social calendar and activities you routinely enjoy, so choosing a senior community that offers similar opportunities will help you feel at home more quickly.

Lifestyle Options

The resident lifestyle is another factor to consider when deciding which community is right for you. All communities have different policies, so it’s important to look at each one carefully. For example, if you have a dog, cat or an iguana, ask about each community’s pet policy. Many communities understand the benefits of pet ownership and your four-legged friend may be a welcome addition. What about your diet? Have you looked over the menu for their dining options? Even better, schedule your visit during mealtime so you can sample the cuisine. Upscale communities offer bistros, cafes and 24-hour options. Also, be sure to consider options for your apartment, and whether you can have a roommate, partner or spouse live with you. Ensuring you have a good understanding of each community’s policies and practices helps you feel confident that you’ll be able to maintain your personal lifestyle choices and continue living life the way you wish.

Budget & Location

Budget and location are key in finding the best senior living community for you. How much can you spend upfront and monthly? Is pricing clear and easy to understand? Is future care included in your fees? Is financial assistance available should you need it? When determining your budget, it is helpful to meet with an advisor to review and analyze your current monthly bills and savings. After analyzing your financial situation, you can focus on communities that meet your needs and fit within your budget.

In terms of location, consider whether you’re comfortable with changing neighborhoods, towns or states. Are you close to relatives and friends? Would a change of weather and climate help your mood or health? Do you prefer to be in an urban setting or would a quiet neighborhood suit you? These are all questions that will impact your search.

By knowing what to look for when selecting a senior living community and determining a realistic budget and location, you increase the chances of finding the perfect community for you. We hope you’ll consider the advantages of Goodwin Living by scheduling a personal appointment with us.
