Who We Are

For more than 55 years and with the intention to serve older adults and those who care for them well into the distant future, Goodwin Living is a faith-based, not-for-profit organization. Our mission guides us, our passion propels us, and the older adults and team members we serve inspire us.

We seek to be a provider of choice for older adults, whether through our home and community based services or at our senior living campuses. We seek to be an employer of choice for those who love older adults. And we seek to be a contributor to social good, sharing what we’ve learned with others so they, too, can uplift the lives of more older adults and those who care for them. What’s more, we believe that older adults offer the world many gifts and we celebrate the many ways Goodwin Living residents, members and patients contribute to a better world around us.

How We Are Measured

We commit ourselves to living up to standards of excellence set by ourselves and by others. That is why Goodwin Living proactively seeks third-party assessments and surveys of our residents, members and patients. We rely on these assessments to ensure we are going all we can, and to find ways to keep being better.

These assessments measure:

  • Resident Satisfaction: Daily, we take in feedback as we strive to deliver on our strategic goal of excellence in all we do. In addition, we engage Holleran (a well-respected senior living research and survey firm) to conduct regular resident satisfaction surveys. These surveys result in plans to build on resident satisfaction and improve.
  • Health Care/Skilled Nursing Performance: Every year, CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid) conducts on-site surveys of the health care centers at our senior living campuses. We are grateful that our campuses continue to receive a five-star rating, which is the highest rating possible. In addition to the CMS surveys, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) also conducts on-site surveys. We are grateful that our campuses continue to receive the highest levels of approval by VDH.
  • Financial Strength: Goodwin Living is a rarity in the world of not-for-profit senior living organizations because we seek investment-grade ratings every year in order to validate our financial strength. For the last four years, we have consistently been rated BBB+ by Fitch Ratings.
  • Team Member Retention and Development: Against the backdrop of a talent shortage across senior living and health care, Goodwin Living stays laser-focused on recruiting and retaining mission-oriented team members. Our team members in turn reward us by giving us high average tenures and by ranking us among the top employers in the Washington Post Top Workplace Survey. We have been recognized as a Top Workplace by the Washington Post survey (which is based entirely on confidential surveys of our team members) for the six consecutive years we have participated in this survey: 2019202020212022, 2023 and 2024.
  • Diversity, Equality and Inclusion: We are committed to being an intentional organization of welcome to all. We have a DEI Committee comprised of team members, residents and members. We fully support U.S. policy regarding equal housing and present no barriers to anyone seeking housing, no matter their race, color, religion, sex, handicap, familial status or national origin. We partner with SAGECare to ensure team members complete training and receive guidance on serving older LGBTQ+ adults and treating everyone with respect and dignity. Since 2020, Goodwin Living has maintained Gold level SAGECare certification.

In addition, we were honored to be selected as the Top Nonprofit of the Year by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce in 2022. We are grateful to the Alexandria Chamber, the Northern Virginia Black Chamber of Commerce, LeadingAge National, LeadingAge Virginia, the National Alliance for Care at Home and the many other organizations to which Goodwin Living belongs that advocate on behalf of our field and support more connected and vibrant communities.
