Cultural and Educational Programs: Lifelong Learning in Alexandria

We believe that lifelong learning and keeping an active mind are keys to maintaining a high quality of life. An engaging choice of cultural and educational opportunities at Goodwin House Alexandria means you’ll never stop learning, whatever your interests.

Creative Arts

Whether you’re a budding Rembrandt, a passionate singer, a novice knitter or a seasoned performer, you’ll find a creative outlet in our community.

Our light-filled art studio is sure to inspire you to put brush to canvas or try new techniques. Under the guidance of our art director and specialized instructors, you might learn to sketch, create sculptures, or carve wood. You can also try your hand at woodworking in our well-equipped workshop. Throughout gallery spaces, we display art by outside experts, who often run classes in their specific medium or style.

As a regional, not-for-profit organization, we’re proud to support the arts within our greater community. Together with Senior Services of Alexandria, the Goodwin Living Foundation sponsors the annual Young At Art exhibit, a juried show highlighting works by local artists aged 55 and up.

There are plenty of chances to sing and act here too, particularly during our annual Arts Festival. You can design sets and costumes if you prefer to use your talents behind the scenes.

Educational Classes

Goodwin House Alexandria hosts frequent in-house educational lectures, while the nearby Northern Virginia Community College (NOVA) offers a discount to Goodwin Living residents and a diverse selection of courses, ranging from architecture to welding.

We also offer a series of seminars open to residents, families and our colleagues, covering practical topics such as financial planning, keeping your will up to date and protecting your assets from scams.

Cultural Trips

Visiting artists regularly perform at Goodwin House Alexandria, but our location close to Washington, D.C., means you’re also within easy reach of numerous arts venues and renowned institutions, such as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, 17 world-class Smithsonian museums and Georgetown University events.

Many residents choose to volunteer in the wider community too, by working as a museum docent, tutoring in a local school or helping at a homeless shelter.

Getting around is easy. Our organized trips use our private transportation service or you can take advantage of convenient public transportation.
