Classes Designed to Enhance Mobility, Safety of Residents to Maintain Independent Lifestyle

Alexandria, Va. – Today, The Lewinsville Retirement Residence (LRR) and Goodwin Living™ announced an expansion of the services that Goodwin Living provides to the residents of LRR. As part of this service expansion, residents at The Lewinsville now have on-site access to specialized fitness and yoga classes as well as rehabilitation services provided by Goodwin Rehabilitation.

Well-known for its quality housing for low-income older adults, The Lewinsville is located in McLean, Va., and home to 170 residents. Goodwin Living, a faith-based not-for-profit senior living and health care services organization, provides a range of health care and wellness services to older adults across the National Capital Region.

Research shows that one of the most effective approaches to helping older adults sustain independence and avoid the costs associated with assisted living and nursing care is regular fitness activity and access to physical and occupational therapy services. In 2025, Fairfax County had roughly 3,500 affordable senior housing units, many being independent living only, alongside a few low-income assisted living communities, adding importance to efforts to help older adults remain healthy and independent.

“The Lewinsville is thrilled to expand our partnership with Goodwin Living by providing  Goodwin Rehabilitation services to the residents we serve, especially because our residents have limited resources to access many health services,” said Courtney Nuzzo, Executive Director of The Lewinsville. “Having rehabilitation staff on site provides convenience and easy access to participate in maintaining their independence. We are truly grateful to have this relationship.”

“Goodwin Rehabilitation is honored and grateful to be in service to the residents of The Lewinsville and bring our exceptional rehab professionals and technology resources to support them in maintaining and improving strength, mobility and independence, while managing any pain they may be experiencing,” said Melinda Gren, DPT, Vice President of Performance and Operations, Goodwin Living Health. “Goodwin Rehabilitation will provide personalized physical therapy at The Lewinsville as well as specialty programs such as fall prevention, vestibular rehabilitation, and rehabilitation protocols for joint replacement, fractures, CVA, cardiac, pulmonary and more. The opportunity to bring in additional rehabilitative services is also available when needs arise.”

Goodwin Rehabilitation is in-network with Medicare, several Medicare Advantage plans and select Medicaid plans and provides outpatient rehab services at its location at 5000 Fairbanks Avenue in the West End of Alexandria. Goodwin Rehabilitation was the first provider in Northern Virginia to introduce Vitala, an innovative technology platform that supports guided exercise, progress tracking and ongoing therapist oversight.

Group exercise classes at The Lewinsville focus on strength, balance and flexibility to support overall health and wellness while addressing the areas where older adults most commonly experience challenges. Classes will routinely be modified to reflect the needs, abilities and preferences of participants and may be adjusted seasonally. Seasonal offerings will include outdoor walking groups, emphasizing the benefits of fresh air, sunshine and varied terrain to enhance physical function and overall well-being.

The Lewinsville and Goodwin Rehabilitation will host an open house in the coming months for referral partners, government officials and local media to see this dynamic new partnership in action.

Goodwin Living has provided management services support to The Lewinsville Retirement Residence since 2000, including accounting administration, human resources and general business functions as part of the faith-based, not-for-profit organization’s community services commitment.

“Our 26-year partnership with The Lewinsville Retirement Residence is rooted in a shared commitment to uplifting older adults, and we are thrilled to evolve that relationship beyond our foundational management services,” said Rob Liebreich, President and CEO of Goodwin Living. “By integrating specialized fitness and rehabilitative care, we are deepening our mission to honor and uplift older adults, ensuring they have the tools to thrive physically and socially within the community they call home.”
