(Alexandria, Va.) – Goodwin Living™ celebrates the recognition of its health care centers at Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads (GHBC) and Goodwin House Alexandria (GHA) as “2026 Best Nursing Homes” in lists published by U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek earlier this month.

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) routinely conducts inspections at nursing care facilities to confirm compliance with federal standards. Both U.S. News and Newsweek draw on these CMS evaluations to offer a valuable resource for those seeking high-quality nursing care.

U.S. News awarded the “Best Nursing Home” designation to just 19% of the more than 15,000 nursing homes evaluated this year. Ratings were based on care, safety, infection rates, staffing and health inspections. This year also marks the first time the ratings measured weekend staffing and infection rates that led to hospitalizations. A nursing home must be recognized as “High Performing” in short-term rehabilitation, long-term care or both to receive the U.S. News designation. The GHA and GHBC Health Care Centers are among nine nursing homes in Northern Virginia to be recognized as “High Performing” for both short-term rehabilitation and long-term care.

Newsweek’s rankings evaluated more than 14,700 nursing homes across the United States. Its methodology places additional emphasis on peer recommendations, family satisfaction and new quality measures such as vaccination rates. Approximately 1,200 nursing homes across 33 states were recognized this year. The GHA and GHBC Health Care Centers were among just seven nursing homes with 50-99 beds recognized in the state of Virginia.

“As people live longer, the call to deliver excellence in senior living becomes even more vital. We remain deeply committed to providing the highest quality of care and uplifting the lives of older adults and those who care for them,” said Rob Liebreich, Goodwin Living President and CEO. “These recognitions from U.S. News & World Report and Newsweek reflect the dedication and compassion of our team members, who in turn are uplifted by the support and kindness of residents.”

GHA and GHBC are life plan communities offering the full continuum of care. Each campus includes a Health Care Center that is licensed and evaluated by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services as a nursing home. Both health care centers provide long-term care and short-term skilled nursing and rehabilitation. Short-term rehabilitation, or post-acute care, often involves physical therapy for patients following a hospitalization for heart attack, stroke, surgery, injury or other conditions. Long-term care is for those who are no longer able to live independently and need medical supervision. The GHBC Health Care Center serves up to 69 residents and the GHA Health Care Center serves up to 80 residents.

“Our success begins with the dedication of our amazing team. Their expertise, compassion and clinical competence ensure we provide the highest quality of care to residents,” said Karen Doyle, Associate Executive Director at GHBC. “With on-site medical services and committed care partners, we support residents in every aspect of their daily lives. Our goal is always to honor who they were before they came to us, helping them make a smooth transition and enjoy the best possible quality of life.”

“Our innovative Small Houses truly feel like home because everyone has a role to play,” said Jackie Barbarito Scholar, GHA Licensed Nursing Home Administrator. “Nurses provide exceptional clinical care, and our care partners get to know each resident’s habits, preferences and routines. Whether it’s supporting an early riser, letting someone sleep in or doing math problems with a former teacher living with dementia, every interaction matters. Dining, Environmental Services and our entire interdisciplinary team all work together to create excellence and ensure residents live with dignity and joy.”
