Goodwin House Hospice Receives Accreditation

Alexandria, VA – Goodwin House Incorporated (GHI) announced today that its hospice program received accreditation from the Community Health Accreditation Partner (CHAP). CHAP is an independent, non-profit accrediting body for home and community-based health care organizations. To achieve CHAP accreditation, organizations must submit to a rigorous review that includes an in-depth application process, comprehensive self-study and readiness exercise, and on-site visits.

“Goodwin House proactively sought the CHAP accreditation to ensure we exceed quality and compliance standards for our hospice services,” said Cynthia Carney, executive director of Goodwin House Palliative Care and Hospice. “We believe it is a privilege to support, honor and uplift older adults and their loved ones, especially when they are in a difficult and vulnerable stage of life, and that we should provide these services to the highest degree of excellence and compassion.”

Goodwin House Hospice provides services to individuals with life-limiting illnesses, people of all ages in their homes in the Northern Virginia area and to older adults in the two GHI Life Plan Communities, Goodwin House Alexandria and Goodwin House Bailey’s Crossroads. Goodwin House Hospice professionals work closely with patients, family members and caregivers in creating a personalized plan of care that leads to a more comfortable, peaceful end-of-life experience for everyone involved.

The CHAP accreditation comes on the heels of another recent designation for Goodwin House Hospice. Dr. Margaret Gloria, medical director of Goodwin House Palliative Care and Hospice, achieved the Hospice Medical Director Certification (HMDC®) in August. Physicians earn this certification by demonstrating that they meet exceptional standards for knowledge and practice as a hospice physician.

“Goodwin House Hospice brings unique talent and expertise to serving the needs of hospice patients and their loved ones across Northern Virginia,” stated Linda Lateana, GHI chief operating officer. “Our not-for-profit, faith-based organization has more than 50 years of experience in exclusively serving older adults and understanding their needs and desires in both life and death.”

The Goodwin House Hospice CHAP accreditation is effective through October 2022.

About CHAP

CHAP is an independent, nonprofit accrediting body for home and community-based health care organizations. Created in 1965, CHAP was the first to recognize the need and value for accreditation in home and community-based care with more than 5,000 organizations currently accredited nationwide. Through “deeming” authority granted by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), CHAP is a nationally approved accrediting organization who retains authority to survey agencies providing home health, hospice, pharmacy, infusion therapy nursing and home medical equipment services, to determine if they meet the Medicare Conditions of Participation and CMS Quality Standards. CHAP’s mission is to define, verify, and advance the highest quality of home and community-based care through its standards, accreditation, education, and research.
